Can a tax base be made of pot?

Thursday, July 29, 2010

I was feeling a little under the weather yesterday, so I stayed home and spent a considerable amount of time trying to solve the city’s tax base problem.  We need more businesses in the city to help pay for city services that are currently shouldered by you and me…the taxpayers.  Maybe this could help.

Oakland, California, has become the first city in the U-S to authorize large-scale industrial pot cultivation. Yup.  I'm saying the Limestone City, Canada's Peneteniary Capitol, the Freshwater Sailing Capitol of the World could also be known as Hemp City!

City council in Oakland has voted in favour of a plan to license four production plants where marijuana would be grown, packaged and processed for medical use.  Under the plan, the facilities would not be limited in size, but they would be heavily taxed and regulated. Supporters say it would create jobs and bring in millions of dollars to the city.

Here in the Greater Kingston area, every fall the police raid marijuana patches in the rural areas outside of Kingston and Napanee.  So, here’s a chance to start a new legal biz and bring a much needed increase to the city’s tax base.  Maybe we should see how the mayoralty candidates feel about it….
